Major Railway Projects Get Green Light: A Boost for Connectivity and Employment
In a pivotal move, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has greenlit three major railway projects under the Ministry of Railways, totaling an estimated ₹6,456 crore. Slated for completion by the fiscal year 2028-29, these projects are poised to generate approximately 114 lakh man-days of employment during their construction phases. The approved projects are:
- Jamshedpur-Purulia-Asansol 3rd Line
- Sardega-Bhalumuda New Double Line
- Bargarh Road-Nawapara Road New Line
These initiatives aim to revolutionize connectivity and efficiency across Indian Railways, addressing bottlenecks and congestion in some of the country’s busiest railway corridors. The new lines and multi-tracking efforts are expected to significantly enhance service reliability, streamline supply chains, and boost regional economic growth.
Rooted in the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity, these projects embody a vision for a more interconnected and efficient India. Spanning seven districts across Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh, the initiatives will expand the railway network by approximately 300 kilometers. They also promise to improve transportation networks, enhance logistical efficiency, and spur economic development by connecting previously isolated regions.
Jamshedpur-Purulia-Asansol 3rd Line: Connecting Key Regions
The Jamshedpur-Purulia-Asansol 3rd Line project, stretching 121 kilometers at an estimated cost of ₹2,170 crore, is a game-changer for West Bengal and Jharkhand. This multi-tracking project will bolster passenger and freight movement, linking major corridors like Delhi-Howrah and Howrah-Mumbai. It will also facilitate the transport of crucial resources such as iron ore and coal to steel plants, while improving access to tourist and pilgrimage sites like Maithan Dam and Kalyaneswari Temple. With an anticipated 42 lakh man-days of employment and a reduction of 74 crore kilograms in CO2 emissions, this project is a win for both connectivity and environmental sustainability.
Sardega-Bhalumuda New Double Line: Bridging Cultural and Social Gaps
The new 37-kilometer double line from Sardega in Odisha to Bhalumuda in Chhattisgarh, costing ₹1,360 crore, will significantly enhance connectivity in regions with strong cultural ties. With no current bus service between these areas, the new railway line will offer a reliable transportation alternative, benefiting local communities and fostering regional integration. The project is expected to generate 25 lakh man-days of employment and save 84 crore kilograms of CO2 emissions, equivalent to planting 3.4 crore trees.
Bargarh Road-Nawapara Road New Line: Enhancing Regional Connectivity
Spanning 138 kilometers and costing ₹2,926 crore, the Bargarh Road-Nawapara Road new line will improve connectivity in Odisha's Bargarh and Nuapada districts. By reducing the distance between Sambalpur and Raipur by 87 kilometers, it will facilitate more efficient transport of goods like rice, cement, and steel. The line will also support cultural and religious tourism, particularly with its proximity to the Nrusinghanath Temple. This project is set to create 47 lakh man-days of employment and save 82 crore kilograms of CO2 emissions, equivalent to planting 3.3 crore trees.
Conclusion
The approval of these railway projects signifies a transformative step for India’s transportation infrastructure. By enhancing connectivity and reducing logistical challenges, these initiatives will not only drive regional economic development but also align with India’s sustainability and self-reliance goals. With significant employment opportunities and environmental benefits on the horizon, these projects represent a leap towards a more connected and prosperous future for the nation.
