The Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, recently chaired a historic signing ceremony that marked a major milestone in India's green energy journey. The first-ever agreement for the export of Green Ammonia from India to Japan was signed, signaling India’s rising status as a global leader in green hydrogen and ammonia production.
The Heads of Terms (HoT) agreement was inked by key industry players Sembcorp Industries, Sojitz Corporation, Kyushu Electric Power Co., and NYK Line forming a strategic partnership for the supply of green ammonia from India to Japan. This groundbreaking collaboration is the first of its kind between the two nations, highlighting India’s growing influence in the global green energy arena.
Under this agreement, Sembcorp Industries will spearhead the production of green ammonia in India, utilizing the country’s abundant renewable energy resources. Kyushu Electric Power Co. will integrate this green ammonia into their energy mix in Japan, significantly reducing their coal consumption at thermal power plants. Sojitz Corporation will act as the business bridge, connecting the green ammonia producer in India with the offtaker in Japan, while NYK Line will manage the maritime transportation of the green ammonia, ensuring its safe and efficient delivery from India to Japan.
During the ceremony, Shri Pralhad Joshi hailed the agreement as a landmark achievement, stating, "Today is a historic day as we witness the first-ever agreement for the supply of Green Ammonia from India to Japan. This partnership will establish a robust and sustainable supply chain from production in India to consumption in Japan, setting the stage for future collaborations in the green energy sector."
The Minister also highlighted India’s rapid strides in green hydrogen and renewable energy, driven by the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to becoming a global powerhouse in green hydrogen and ammonia production, emphasizing the importance of strategic partnerships, a strong regulatory framework, and significant investments in the sector.
In addition, Shri Pralhad Joshi announced the launch of a tender for 750,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of Green Ammonia, with additional tenders for 450,000 TPA capacity also underway. These initiatives are part of India’s ambitious strategy to incentivize the production of over a million tonnes of Green Hydrogen annually, showcasing India’s readiness to scale up green energy production at an unprecedented rate.
The Minister also reflected on the deep cultural and diplomatic ties between India, Japan, and Singapore, noting their collaboration on energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. He expressed confidence that this agreement is just the beginning of India’s expanding role in the global green energy sector, with even more ambitious projects on the horizon.
This agreement not only solidifies India’s position as a pivotal player in the global green energy market but also underscores the Indian government’s unwavering support for green hydrogen and renewable energy initiatives. The collaboration with Japan stands as a testament to India’s growing expertise and commitment to sustainable development and energy independence.
