India's First Indigenous Pollution Control Vessel, 'Samudra Pratap,' Launched by Raksha Rajya Mantri in Goa
India's Defence Production Revolution: Raksha Rajya Mantri's Vision Unveiled with Launch of Samudra Pratap
In a major step towards bolstering national self-reliance in defence, Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth has called on industry leaders to drive India towards becoming not only fully self-sufficient in defence production but also a significant exporter. This call to action came during the launch of the first indigenously built Pollution Control Vessel, 'Samudra Pratap', at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) on August 29, 2024.
The vessel, crafted by GSL for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), is designed to address critical oil spillage issues along India's coastline. Named 'Samudra Pratap' by Smt Neeta Seth in the presence of Shri Sanjay Seth, the ship represents a significant achievement in India's shipbuilding industry.
Shri Sanjay Seth highlighted the nation's remarkable progress, noting that under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's leadership, India has risen to become the fifth largest economy globally. He proudly emphasized that India’s strides in self-reliance in shipbuilding are paving the way for the country to construct vessels not only for national needs but also for international clients.
GSL, a leading Indian shipyard, has signed a contract to build two Pollution Control Vessels for the Indian Coast Guard at a cost of Rs 583 Crores. This marks a milestone as these vessels are the first to be designed and constructed entirely within India. With a length of 114.5 meters, a breadth of 16.5 meters, and a displacement of 4170 tons, the vessel embodies the cutting-edge capabilities of Indian shipbuilding.
The keel-laying ceremony for the vessel took place on November 21, 2022, and the launch event was attended by prominent figures including Shri Brajesh Kumar Upadhyaya, Chairman and Managing Director of GSL, along with officials from the Ministry of Defence, Indian Coast Guard, Indian Navy, and Goa Shipyard Ltd.
'Samudra Pratap' stands as a testament to India's advanced shipbuilding capabilities and marks GSL's entry into the elite league of Indian shipyards capable of producing sophisticated Pollution Control Vessels.
