NHPC Limited has proudly been awarded the prestigious ‘Navratna’ status by the Government of India, a recognition that marks a significant milestone in the company's history. The official declaration was made on August 30, 2024, by the Department of Public Enterprises under the Ministry of Finance. This coveted status grants NHPC greater operational and financial autonomy, propelling the company into an elite group of public sector enterprises.
Shri R.K. Chaudhary, CMD of NHPC, shared his enthusiasm, stating, "This is a truly historic moment for the NHPC family, and it reflects our exceptional financial and operational achievements." He expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of NHPC to the Ministry of Power for their unwavering trust and support, which played a crucial role in earning this recognition. Shri Chaudhary emphasized NHPC's pivotal role in India's power sector, particularly in harnessing the country's hydropower potential. "As a green power company, we have also diversified into wind and solar energy, reinforcing our commitment to sustainable energy solutions," he added.
The Navratna status brings a host of benefits to NHPC, enabling faster decision-making, boosting efficiency, and empowering employees. It paves the way for significant capital expenditures and investment plans, driving growth, expanding market reach, and achieving long-term gains. With enhanced powers, NHPC can now establish joint ventures, set up overseas offices, explore new markets, and leverage local expertise. This status also opens doors for technological innovation, strengthening market positioning, and facilitating mergers and acquisitions, which will contribute to the company's growth and increased market share.
Currently, NHPC boasts an impressive installed capacity of 7,144.20 MW and is actively engaged in the construction of projects totaling 10,442.70 MW. Notable projects include the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower project in Assam/Arunachal Pradesh and the 2,880 MW Dibang Multipurpose project in Arunachal Pradesh. NHPC is working on more than 50,000 MW of capacity across various stages of development, with ambitious goals of achieving 23,000 MW by 2032 and 50,000 MW by 2047.
