Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan Announces 1-Acre "Matri Van" Project by Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare
Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, led a major environmental initiative today, where over 800 institutions under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare took part in a nationwide tree-planting campaign. As part of this effort, an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 saplings were planted, highlighting the ministry’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
The event, held at the IARI Campus PUSA, was part of the #एक_पेड़_मां_के_नाम (#Plant4Mother) campaign, a global initiative launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on World Environment Day, June 5, 2024. The campaign aims to inspire millions to plant trees in honor of their mothers and Mother Earth, symbolizing respect and care for the environment.
Shri Chouhan announced that the Ministry plans to establish a “Matri Van” (Mother’s Forest) on approximately one acre of land. The event saw active participation from Minister of State Shri Ramnath Thakur, Secretary DARE & DG ICAR, Dr. Himanshu Pathak, and around 200 ministry officers, staff, and school students. In a synchronized effort, all subordinate offices of DA&FW, ICAR institutions, CAUs, KVKs, and SAUs across the country conducted similar tree-planting activities.
In a broader scope, the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change is working towards planting 80 crore saplings by September 2024 and reaching a total of 140 crore saplings by March 2025. The tree-planting activities began on June 20, 2024, at the Asola Bhati Wildlife Sanctuary, where individuals planted trees in tribute to their mothers. This initiative aligns with the Government’s Mission LiFE, a mass movement advocating for an environmentally conscious lifestyle.
Planting trees is not just an act of environmental stewardship but also a vital step toward sustainable farming. Trees improve soil health, water quality, and biodiversity, thereby enhancing farm productivity. Additionally, they offer farmers an extra source of income through timber and non-timber products. This campaign holds great potential for preventing and reversing land degradation and desertification, contributing significantly to environmental conservation efforts.
