Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal Visits Maritime Training Institute in Mumbai
Celebrates National Space Day and Plants a Tree in Support of “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”
In a significant visit, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, made his way to the Maritime Training Institute (MTI) in Powai, Mumbai. Renowned for over three decades of exceptional maritime training, MTI Powai stands as a pillar of excellence in India’s maritime education sector.
During his visit, Shri Sonowal engaged with key officials from the Shipping Corporation of India Limited (SCI), Shipping Corporation of India Land and Assets Limited (SCILAL), the Directorate General of Shipping, the Indian Register of Shipping, and other industry stakeholders. The Minister toured MTI’s cutting-edge facilities and participated in the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign by planting a sapling in the institute's ‘Ayush Vatika’.
The occasion also marked the celebration of India’s first National Space Day, commemorating the country's remarkable achievement of becoming the fourth nation to land on the moon and the first to reach its southern polar region on August 23, 2023. Under the theme "Touching Lives while Touching the Moon: India's Space Saga," this day is celebrated nationwide.
Addressing both senior officers and the aspiring cadets, Shri Sonowal underscored India’s aspirations under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership to become a leading international power in the Amrit Kaal Vision. He urged the youth to embody principles of honesty, dedication, and hard work to realize the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. The Minister highlighted India's strides in maritime sectors including shipbuilding, repair, recycling, and logistics, noting that the country’s improved ranking in the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index reflects its growing global prominence.
Shri Sonowal reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing seafarer safety, welfare, and development, citing ongoing initiatives by the Directorate General of Shipping. He encouraged the young cadets to focus on their health, fitness, and optimal use of their training time at this prestigious institution.
In his welcome address, Captain Binesh Kumar Tyagi, Chairman and Managing Director of SCI & SCILAL, expressed gratitude to Shri Sonowal and other dignitaries. He acknowledged the vital role of SCI in supporting India’s space exploration missions through its maritime expertise and vessels.
The event was a memorable blend of maritime tradition and national pride, celebrating both the achievements of Indian space exploration and the promising future of the nation’s young maritime professionals.
