India's coal sector is on the cusp of a major transformation, driven by a dynamic and far-reaching strategy from the union government. This ambitious plan is designed to accelerate infrastructure development and foster close collaboration among key stakeholders. It forms a crucial part of the Ministry's broader vision to position India as a global leader in sustainable coal production and logistics, aligning with the nation's goal of becoming a prosperous, developed country by 2047.
A strong coal evacuation network is vital for ensuring India's energy security. It guarantees a steady and reliable coal supply to meet the ever-growing demands of power plants and industries across the nation. In a bold move to strengthen this network, the Ministry of Coal has launched a strategic plan focused on the development of essential logistics projects. This initiative dovetails with the PM Gati Shakti vision of "Integrated planning and synchronized time-bound implementation," a key approach to achieving the ambitious Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
Central to this strategy is the identification and fast-tracking of 38 priority rail projects under the coal logistics plan, in close coordination with the Ministry of Railways. These projects are crucial for improving rail connectivity, ensuring timely coal supply, and reducing logistics costs, thereby boosting the overall efficiency of coal transportation nationwide.
Two of these priority projects have recently received government approval in Odisha: the Sardega-Bhalumuda double line and the Bargarh Road-Nawapara Road single line.
The Sardega-Bhalumuda new double line, spanning 37.24 km through key coal blocks in the IB Valley and Mand-Raigarh Coalfield, is set to revolutionize coal evacuation from mines operated by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) and several private mines. This project is particularly strategic as it shortens the transportation distance to power plants in Northern India from Sardega, significantly enhancing efficiency.
Meanwhile, the 138.32 km Bargarh Road-Nawapara Road new single line will dramatically improve coal evacuation from the Talcher Coalfield, offering a direct and shorter route to Nagpur and the western regions. This project is expected to substantially cut logistics costs and enhance the overall efficiency of coal transportation from the Talcher region.
Under the visionary leadership of the Coal Minister, the Ministry of Coal remains steadfast in its commitment to fast-tracking these and other critical projects. The aim is not only to meet India's current energy demands but also to lay the foundation for a sustainable and developed nation by 2047.
