Cabinet approves 'Mission Mausam' for a Climate-Resilient India with Rs. 2,000 Crore Budget Over Two Years

Mission Mausam: Strengthening India's Resilience to Extreme Weather and Climate Change

India is taking a major leap forward in its fight against extreme weather events and the growing impacts of climate change with the launch of Mission Mausam. Approved by the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this transformative initiative is set to be a game-changer in how the country approaches weather forecasting, climate research, and disaster preparedness.

With a significant investment of Rs. 2,000 crore over two years, Mission Mausam will be implemented by the Ministry of Earth Sciences and aims to revolutionize India's capacity to predict, manage, and mitigate the effects of extreme weather. This initiative will benefit various sectors, including agriculture, disaster management, health, energy, and transportation.

Mission Mausam

Cutting-Edge Technology for Precise Weather Forecasting

At the heart of Mission Mausam is the integration of next-generation radars, advanced satellite systems, and high-performance supercomputers. These systems will be equipped with state-of-the-art sensors to capture real-time data on weather conditions across the country. With the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning, these technologies will dramatically enhance the precision of weather predictions, from forecasting monsoons to alerting citizens about air quality and impending cyclones.

The mission will also focus on innovative weather interventions such as managing fog, hail, and rainfall, ensuring timely and accurate forecasts that reach even the most remote communities.

A Broad Spectrum of Benefits

Mission Mausam will be a cornerstone for multiple sectors that rely heavily on weather and climate data. Farmers will benefit from precise monsoon predictions, helping them plan their crops and irrigation more effectively. Disaster management agencies will be better prepared for extreme events like floods, droughts, and cyclones, saving lives and reducing economic losses. Defense and aviation sectors will have improved tools for safe navigation and operational planning. Additionally, urban planners and transport authorities can optimize infrastructure and logistics, ensuring resilience against future climate impacts.

Global Collaboration and National Leadership

To achieve its ambitious goals, Mission Mausam will harness the expertise of key scientific institutions like the India Meteorological Department, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting. These institutes will collaborate with national and international research bodies, industries, and academia, further cementing India's position as a leader in weather and climate sciences.

By enhancing data-driven decision-making and fostering a culture of resilience, Mission Mausam will ensure India remains at the forefront of global climate action, helping to safeguard its people, economy, and ecosystems for generations to come.
