Ministry of Earth Sciences Hosts National Media Interaction on 'Mission Mausam' The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) held a national-level media interaction on the ambitious Mission Mausam at Prithvi Bhavan, New Delhi. NHA and IIT Kanpur Forge Groundbreaking AI Partnership for Health Research

In a significant stride towards enhancing healthcare through technology, the National Health Authority (NHA) and IIT Kanpur have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop an innovative platform under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). This partnership is set to revolutionize the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in health research, aiming to improve health outcomes through a state-of-the-art data and AI benchmarking system.

Key Elements of the MoU

The agreement, signed by Ms. L. S. Changsan, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare & CEO of NHA, and Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, will see the development of several pivotal components:

  • Federated Learning Platform: A platform for collaborative machine learning model pipelines.
  • Quality-Preserving Database: A robust database ensuring high-quality data for research.
  • Open Benchmarking Platform: A public platform for comparing and validating AI models.
  • Consent Management System: A system for managing research consent under ABDM.

Addressing the Impact on Healthcare

Union Health Secretary Shri Apurva Chandra praised the MoU, highlighting its potential to set new standards in AI model benchmarking. He emphasized that the partnership will use ABDM's extensive data to create a public benchmark for AI models, enhancing the accuracy and reliability of disease diagnosis and treatment.

“This MoU represents a crucial advancement in using data to improve health outcomes,” Shri Chandra stated. “By addressing challenges related to data availability and efficacy in disease diagnosis, this collaboration promises to enhance clinical outcomes and support better healthcare solutions.”

Strengthening AI in Health Research

Ms. L. S. Changsan noted that this partnership is a milestone in harnessing AI for India's healthcare sector. The initiative will provide researchers with access to high-quality data and foster collaboration with other stakeholders while prioritizing data privacy. It aims to accelerate the development of AI-powered health solutions to tackle pressing health challenges.

Prof. Manindra Agrawal expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing its potential to democratize access to quality healthcare in India. “By partnering with NHA, IIT Kanpur aims to build a transformative platform that will enable researchers, healthcare providers, and policymakers to fully leverage AI for enhancing health outcomes across the country,” he said.

  • Trustworthy Models: It will allow AI model providers to validate their models and establish publicly verifiable performance benchmarks, fostering trust in AI healthcare applications.

  • Statistical Quality Preservation: By protecting healthcare data from statistical exploitation, the platform will maintain high standards of data quality while promoting innovation.

Background on ABDM

Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2021, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) aims to create a comprehensive digital health ecosystem by integrating various healthcare entities such as hospitals, clinics, labs, and health insurance providers. ABDM's integration with AI technologies has the potential to drive significant advancements in disease diagnosis, treatment planning, and overall patient care.

This partnership between NHA and IIT Kanpur marks a major step forward in leveraging AI to transform India’s healthcare landscape, promising to enhance patient outcomes and streamline health research.
